Given the various services out there that often claim to deliver miraculous results for the efficiency and reliability of central heating systems, it’s understandable that you may be a little cynical about the suggestion that powerflushing could have such an effect on yours.

However, powerflushing is certainly not one of those overhyped services you should be wary of. In fact, not having a powerflush undertaken at least every five to six years could be putting the continued trouble-free operation of your boiler at risk.

So, what is a powerflush?

A powerflush is, in a nutshell, a means of cleansing or ‘flushing’ a heating system that rids it of the deposits of sludge, rust and other debris that can otherwise accumulate over time.

These unwanted by-products are gradually deposited through a heating system down the years as water passes through the pipes, boiler and radiators, leading to the build-up of an unpleasant mud-like substance, or ‘sludge’.

If this sludge is simply left to collect over time without being tackled, corrosion and blockages can eventually occur that hamper the efficiency of the boiler and, in the worst cases, even cause it to break down.

The signs that now might be the time to consider a powerflush

There are certain common telltale indicators that a central heating system may be in need of a powerflush – ranging from cold areas on radiators and the heating being slow to warm up, right through to excessive boiler noise and the boiler regularly shutting down and needing to restart.

These are just some of the symptoms that our Wimbledon plumbers encounter on a regular basis. It especially saddens us to come across these problems so often, because a powerflush is a relatively unfussy procedure that can bring so many benefits to a central heating system.
