Everyone needs to use one at some time during the day, but is your toilet using more water than it needs? Although many new homes have water-saving features, some still have older types of toilet that are far from the most efficient toilets available these days.

That’s why our own Leatherhead, Wimbledon and Clapham plumbers decided to take a look at just five of the ways the typical homeowner can lessen their toilet water usage, even if they have a relatively new toilet.

  1. 1. Displace water in the tank

One of the methods that many people have used in the past to save water in the toilet tank, is placing something inside to displace some of the water.

If you decide to do this, make sure you use something that won’t break up or degrade in the tank like bricks. We would suggest using a small plastic bottle filled with stones and sealed up.

  1. 2. Water level adjustment

The water level in your toilet is set by the mechanism so that it doesn’t overfill. In older toilet tanks, this was a ball on a copper rod that floated on top of the water.

You can adjust the level of water so that it doesn’t fill up too much and uses less water. To get this right and not cause any problems, it's best to call a plumber to help you. You can find Clapham plumbers and those in other areas of London and the South East who can do this for you.

  1. 3. Check or change your filler valve

Sometimes, a faulty part can cause your toilet to use more water than it should. One component that can cause a problem is the filler valve.

This valve allows water to fill the tank after you have flushed. If this valve is broken or damaged, it can cause water to go into your overflow, thereby wasting water.

Call professional Sunbury, Dorking or Clapham plumbers or those in your own area to come and fit a new filler valve in your home.

  1. 4. Fit a dual-flush toilet

New houses will have a dual-flush toilet installed that can use different amounts of water depending on the occupant’s needs.

As a rule, these toilets can save as much as 67% of the water compared to older toilets. If you have an older toilet, then changing to a dual-flush version will provide a huge saving.

If you don’t want to change the look of your toilet and tank, then you can buy dual-flush conversion kits that can be fitted to your existing tank.

  1. 5. Low-flow toilets

If you want your toilet to be even more efficient than the dual-flush, then you should invest in a low-flow toilet.

These toilets use gravity or pressure to move the waste, so they use a lot less water. Many of the designs of these toilets use around 1.28 gallons per flush, whereas a traditional toilet can use between four and seven gallons per flush.

The above are just some of the ways in which you might save water when using your toilet. But whatever you look to do with your toilet, it’s a good idea to seek out advice from professionals – such as our own Tadworth, Barnes and Clapham plumbers here at PGS Plumbers – to help ensure you don’t make any costly mistakes.
